Coyne Basic Life Support Certification

The electrical training ALLIANCE in partnership with Coyne First Aid will equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to provide life-saving care to someone in need.

Coyne First Aid has been providing instructor training to IBEW/NECA training centers for more than 20 years. The Coyne Basic Life Support course is delivered in two parts: on-line and hands-on. A training center must have access to a Coyne First Aid credentialed instructor to provide the required hands-on portion of the course.

LMS Course - On-line Portion

Course Layout for Completion

  • The course will take approximately 75 minutes to complete.
  • All training and reference material is contained in the course.
  • This course consists of one module broken down into five smaller modules.
  • Each module is presented with narrated video instructions, followed by interactive quizzes and thought-provoking scenarios.
  • Each module quiz must be completed and passed with a score of 80% or higher to move onto the next topic.
  • Quizzes are timed.
  • You can review each module and re-take quizzes as many times as needed to obtain a passing score.
  • Once a passing score is obtained, you will continue to the next module.
  • This course is designed to be completed in one sitting. If you exit the course, you will not be allowed to resume from where you left off.
  • Completion certificate is issued through the LMS. This certificate provides proof of completion for the on-line portion only, not the hands-on portion.

Hands-on Demonstration

Students demonstrate their ability to perform the following skills in the presence of a Coyne First Aid Credentialed Instructor:

  • Single rescuer CPR on an adult manikin.
  • CPR on an adult manikin with the arrival of a second rescuer.
  • Proper use of an AED on an adult manikin.
  • Proper care for a conscious adult with an obstructed airway.
  • Proper care for an adult with an obstructed airway who becomes unconscious.
  • How to place a patient in the recovery position two different ways.

Credentialed Instructor

There are three levels of instructor credentials:

  • Master Instructor - Can train Instructor Trainers.
  • Instructor Trainers - Can train others in your organization to become Instructors (can also train students).
  • Instructors - Can train students.

You may also choose to have a guest instructor from a neighboring training center provide the hands-on portion of the training.

Process to be credentialed:

  • Have an instructor attend a two-day seminar at the Coyne First Aid Training Center to become an Instructor Trainer. This Instructor Trainer can then train other Instructors in your organization.
  • Invite Coyne First Aid to provide the same training above to instructors at your facility.
  • Have an instructor attend the Coyne Instructor Training Course at NTI.

Already credentialed?

You will need the following supplies which can be sourced from Coyne First Aid or any other source of your choosing at the training center's expense.

  • An adult-sized CPR manikin.
  • An automated external defibrillator trainer

If you currently offer in-person Coyne classes and want to make the switch to the Coyne Basic Life Support two-part ( on-line and hands-on) course, see the steps below.

Training Center Role

  1. Enroll students in the Coyne First Aid Basic Life Support LMS course. *
  2. Verify students have successfully completed the LMS course. *
  3. Completion certificate issued through the LMS is required (electronic or printed). *
  4. Schedule in-person hands-on skill classes for students who have successfully completed the LMS course using a Coyne First Aid credentialed instructor.
  5. Classes will last 1-2 hours, depending on the number of students.
  6. Submit course completion information to Coyne (electronic or paper) for students successfully completing the hands-on skills portion.
  7. Distribute Basic Life Support cards to students.

Instructor Role

  1. A current Coyne First Aid Instructor Credential is required to teach the hands-on portion of this course.
  2. Verify the students have all successfully completed the Coyne Basic Life Support LMS course (if not already verified by the JATC office).
  3. Students only need to demonstrate the hands-on skills. *
  4. Have the students demonstrate their ability to perform the following skills:

Student Role

  1. Successfully complete the Coyne First Aid Basic Life Support LMS course. *
  2. Present the completion certificate (paper or electronic) to the sponsoring JATC. *
  3. Attend the in-person hands-on skills class as scheduled by the JATC.
  4. Successfully complete the required hands-on skills witnessed by the credentialed instructor.

The Coyne Basic Life Support Course will cover cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the use of an automated external defibrillator, when and how to place a patient in the recovery position, and how to care for someone with a foreign body airway obstruction. Upon successful completion of this online module, you will meet in-person with a Coyne Instructor and demonstrate your ability to perform the physical skills needed to provide life-saving care.

Successful Completion

After witnessing completion of the required hands-on skills, the credentialed instructor will submit documentation to Coyne First Aid. A Basic Life Support card will be distributed when available.
